___trip

I had the luxury of catching Eurotrip (for something like the fourth or fifth time) on HBO as I ate lunch on Saturday. I don't know what it is but that movie cracks me up every time. It's not the greatest movie I've ever seen or anything but it's certainly funnier than I expected. Maybe it's because I had such low expectations going in, I don't know.

It got me thinking about another movie that I also found surpisingly funny, Road Trip. Like Eurotrip, it's not even a movie I saw in the theater. I don't even remember the first time I saw it (I've probably seen that four or five times too) but I probably just caught it one night on HBO and couldn't turn it off.

SO, faithful pollsters, here's a more-challenging-than-usual poll ... what are your two favorite movies that share a common word in the title (and, no, words like "the" don't count)? If you're completely stuck, you can use sequels but, to me, that's as bad as when rappers "rhyme" by using the SAME WORD at the end of EVERY line.

If my mind didn't happen to wonder around connecting the two on it's own, I might have a hard time with this one so, good luck, I'm thinking you'll need it.

spoofs

There are two movies that I think are incredibly funny and one of them was on TV last night which, if you hadn't guessed yet, is the reason I'm writing about it now.

First, Evolution. You've got David Duchovny's extremely dry humor and delivery contrasted with absurdities from Seann William Scott (of American Pie and, more recently, The Dukes of Hazard fame) and Orlando James (of Sprite commercial fame) and it's just a great cast for that particular movie. On a sidenote, what I didn't know, until last night, was that it was directed by Ivan Reitman (of Ghostbusters fame).

Second, Galaxy Quest. Led by a Shatner-esque character played by Tim Allen, this cast includes a bunch of people that you'll probaby recognize by face only but, nonetheless, they're all great together in this film. Like Evolution, it's another Sci-Fi spoof but this one has a more specific flavor, namely, that of Star Trek.

What I like about these movies is that they're fun for Sci-Fi fans but they're also just as good for people that don't get into the whole Sci-Fi scene. Anybody else have a favorite spoof they'd like to share?

school pride

Okay, for YEARS, I've been trying to figure out why my alma mater (Lehigh University) can't get any love from its "peers" in the annual US News rankings for colleges and universities. Compared to the Ivy League schools who all garner high scores in the "peer assessment" category, Lehigh is always several notches behind and, dare I say, finds itself in the middle of the pack or "average" (for shame!).

While I've heard that Lehigh was always highly ranked as a "party school", I never saw anything in print and chalked it up to biased school pride and unsubstantiated claims. Well, that all changed today when I saw The Princeton Review's Best 361 College Rankings under Party Schools.

I have no idea how this happened but I'm guessing that those claims of years gone by are not so unsubstantiated after all. Do you suppose that this ranking is somehow inversely related to the "peer assessment" score calculated by US News? Hmmm. I'm not saying there is direct causality here but, c'mon, I'm thinking there's a modicum of correlation at the very least :-)

a sad day

Well, as if getting up to face work on Monday morning isn't bad enough, I approached my car this particular Monday morning and saw that someone had been in it while it was parked on the street overnight. To my great sadness, I found my discman missing.

For those of you that don't know, I don't keep anything of monetary value in my car and I typically don't even lock it. In fact, I KNOW there is nothing of monetary value in it because just about a month ago, someone stole the one thing that was worth anything (my change holder in the driver's side door with about $2.50 in it) and left everything else. "Everything else" is, in no particular order, a couple of cassette tapes, a couple of mix CD's, two store-bought CD's and my 10-year old panasonic discman. My discman debatably having the greatest resale value but, honestly, it looks like it's been through a war and it skips pretty easily.

That being said, it has far more sentimental value than a lot of things I use on a daily basis.

It was, up to that point, the most expensive thing I ever bought with my own money ($120).

It also happened to be the first thing I bought with my own money at Circuit City (for those of you that don't know, I would go on to work at Circuit City for about three years and buy MANY things there).

It had been to the shore with me every year since I bought it (which was my sophomore year in highschool if I remember correctly). It had basically provided the soundtrack to my beach visits for about a decade and because music and the beach both mean so much to me, it's tough waking up one morning to see that someone has simply taken them from me.

I'm not so angry as I am sad. I'm trying to not be mad because I might do something I'll regret. Don't get me wrong, I'm pissed off ... but I'm trying to move on. I rode to work in silence (without the radio on which is now the only form of music I have) in a show of respect for a great little discman who performed above the call of duty for longer than I ever imagined it would.

This thief didn't know that some old, beat-up discman meant so much to me. I don't care. I still want his / her head. I just became "tough" on crime.

wonderful world of ebay

Yes, it's true. After months away, I'm back on ebay. I spent about an hour yesterday looking at all kinds of stuff and I'm going to share a couple links that I think are noteworthy.

First, this ebayer is gonna need a lot of help turning around a -1 feedback. I didn't even know you could go negative on feedback. I'm still not sure it's possible.

Second, this car is HOT ... pink that is :-) I'm VERY tempted to offer a bid.

Lastly, this Cadillac is one of the hottest Cadillac's I've ever seen. I've wanted to do an old Caddy for a couple years now and I've been mulling over several styles and artistic directions in my head. It's not exactly the car I think it could be but these guys have actually implemented a bunch of those thoughts into a 1963 Deville (which wasn't, until now, on my "would-be-cool-to-remodel" list) and I think it looks awesome.

favorite TV shows, as an "adult"

Spurred by one of my favorite TV shows returning to the air last night (even if it was an old episode), I'm drafting a poll. As I watched the show, I began to wonder how I would rank it compared to my other favorite programs and the task just became too daunting.

How do I compare Thundercats, Voltron, The Transformers, Dungeons and Dragons, GIJoe, A-Team, HeMan, etc. to Angel, Boston Legal, Dawson's Creek, Saved by the Bell, Swan's Crossing (hahaha, just kidding), X-Files, etc.?

Simply put, I can't. Not just because the shows are so different in their target audiences but because I'M so different from when I watched those early shows.

SO, to narrow it down, how about your three favorite shows from your adult years. What do I mean by "adult", exactly? Well, how about from at least highschool forward. If it's easier to do it from post-highschool or post-college forward, feel free to consider that the cutoff.

Have fun!

back in town

Aight, I'm back in town. My attempts to post while away were thwarted by the lack of broadband connections where I was vacationing. Similarly, my attempts to even write anything to post when I got back were thwarted by my languorous nature and sundry pieces of eye candy on the beach. SO, I've got nothing.

However, I found a couple topics jotted down in a small notebook that I took to the beach with me last year and happened to stumble upon when I took that notebook out at the beach this year. Maybe I can get around to some of those topics (some simlply aren't relevant enough anymore but most probably are) in the next couple days.

As always, keep checking back. If nothing else, I'll get a poll up soon :-)
