Careful what you wish for

I got a client call this morning about an inaccessible server. No one could log in or access any resources. After some quick troubleshooting attempts from the office, I determined that remote administration was not going to cut it on this one.

I quietly wished to myself that whatever the problem was, please don't let it be some MS bluescreen because, well, I hate those. In retrospect, I guess that might have been a mistake.

When I can't remote into a server, that sucks. When I have to physically take my ass over to a client site that doesn't have a monitor, keyboard or mouse hooked up to an inaccessible server, that sucks worse. (If that's the case, I have to "borrow" one from another, typically in-use, workstation because I sure as hell am not lugging that shit along from the office.) When I get to a client site and they point me to a ratty-ass basement with a server sitting on a table in a puddle of water, well, that's sucked the worst so far.

The best part ... when I tell the owner of the business that his server is sitting in a puddle he comes down, looks at it and says, "where the hell did the water come from?" Hahaha, like I give two shits! I'm not a forensic-aquatic-scientist!! While that's important, let's try to focus on the fact that your entire business was residing on that saturated box and you were too cheap to invest in any backup or disaster recovery solution you fucking cheap-ass moron!

Whew, I'll stop now, I feel a little better.

Trying to get back in the swing of things

Well, my four vacations (five weeks) are over this summer and I'm REALLY trying to get back to a normal posting schedule. This marks my third entry in six days and while that's not "daily", it'll have to do for now.

In honor of a website I used to visit back before anyone knew what a "blog" was, I'm going to structure this next post as if I were running the old glassdog.com by Lance Arthur. For those of you that don't know, Lance was a designer and blogger and I learned quite a bit about design, and cool technology from reading his site. So, here goes...

Currently...

Listening to: Resurrection by Brian Vander Ark - the lead singer of The Verve Pipe has an amazing voice and this CD is exactly the kind of thing I was hoping to hear when I bought "Villains" becuase of the song "The Freshmen". It's almost folk-like compared to the "rock" heard today and there are musical things happening that you simply WILL NOT hear on today's radio stations. If the voice and the music wasn't enough to hook me, the lyrics are enthralling. He masterfully paints lyrical pictures of everyday people and past relationships that make the entire collection so much more interesting than the typical "you - my - bitch - I'll - slap - that - crazy - hoe - your - booty - is - so - big - and - its - so - hot - in - here - I - think - I'll - fuck - you - hard - big - daddy - so - get - low" that seems to be so popular today.

Coveting: Nikon D70 digital SLR - sure, there have been tons of new digital cameras since I went all out and bought the first "prosumer" and first 5.0 Megapixel Olympus E-20n but I've never wanted to replace mine, that is, until now. The D70 has gotten GREAT reviews and is really not all that expensive compared to where digital cameras were just two years ago. Hell, it's a much better camera than mine and it's retailing for LESS than I paid about three years ago.

Waiting for: the beginning of college football season. Sure, there were a couple games on last weekend but I'm talking about a full Saturday with 12+ hours of college football previews, games and post-game analysis so that I can safely waste away an entire day without even noticing. Woohoo, I can't wait!

I don't particularly like Texas Hold'em but I know a lot of people that do. For those people, I present this article for perusal.

Here and gone

Well, I got back Friday evening from my two weeks in OC, NJ and I've been unpacking and downloading images from my trip all so I can repack and leave town again on Thursday for Vegas. I actually had a chance to write some post ideas down while I was on vacation but I'm probably not going to take the time to post those until I get back from Vegas. I've been doing a lot of photo work and I've got to get some web work done before I leave town, SO, rest assured, I WILL be posting again soon (but not for about a week and a half unless I REALLY procrastinate from my other work and type out a couple thoughts in the next three days).
