I got a client call this morning about an inaccessible server. No one could log in or access any resources. After some quick troubleshooting attempts from the office, I determined that remote administration was not going to cut it on this one.
I quietly wished to myself that whatever the problem was, please don't let it be some MS bluescreen because, well, I hate those. In retrospect, I guess that might have been a mistake.
When I can't remote into a server, that sucks. When I have to physically take my ass over to a client site that doesn't have a monitor, keyboard or mouse hooked up to an inaccessible server, that sucks worse. (If that's the case, I have to "borrow" one from another, typically in-use, workstation because I sure as hell am not lugging that shit along from the office.) When I get to a client site and they point me to a ratty-ass basement with a server sitting on a table in a puddle of water, well, that's sucked the worst so far.
The best part ... when I tell the owner of the business that his server is sitting in a puddle he comes down, looks at it and says, "where the hell did the water come from?" Hahaha, like I give two shits! I'm not a forensic-aquatic-scientist!! While that's important, let's try to focus on the fact that your entire business was residing on that saturated box and you were too cheap to invest in any backup or disaster recovery solution you fucking cheap-ass moron!
Whew, I'll stop now, I feel a little better.

Posted by: Garrett at August 31, 2004 06:09 PMwow, that is the most pathetic fucking thing I have ever heard. That oblivious to your equipment that it is sitting in its own swimming pool. Now its drowning in its own sorrow, so to speak! ;-) Tom, make sure to keep a wet vac in your car at all times, and lots of Bounty "the quicker, thicker, picker upper"! In all seriousness, I have always loved/hated working on computers. Technology in general fascinates me. Hell, I spent hours when I was young dicking around in qbasic. At the same time, since I have been managing Eisenhards network for the past 2 1/2 years, nothing can be more frustrating. I enjoy the challenge of fixing something that is not cooperating. At the same time, when I spend a couple hours fixing Corrine's laptop which had a worm, only to find out after I have it fixed that two of the keys randomly stop working, I get a little pissed off. Fortunately, as with many laptops, I turned it off, waited an hour, and magically the "l" and "o" keys worked again. Guess its like my Chevelle tonight. Decided to not start for approx two minutes, then revved up fine. fucking machines
