oscars (in the spirit of)

Alright, I never intended to watch the Oscars last night but I somehow managed to see a good 75% of the broadcast. I'm going to keep my thoughts to myself on the whole "Awards Show" scene and keep this post to the movies themselves. Actually, it's not so much a post as a poll (do your best to contain your surprise). SO, let's get to it ...

What critically acclaimed movie is the most overrated movie you have ever seen? I'll leave it open to ANY movie from any genre, time period, subject matter, language, length, etc.. I'm having a hard time narrowing my choices down and if you are too, make it a "Top 3" if you want.

Not necessarily critically acclaimed however, thought of by many to be a great movie: Christmas Story. I would have to look far and wide to find a less-entertaining movie (except for possibly the tongue/frozen pole scene)!!

This is definitely a hard one, so I'll have to make it a top 3 here ( in random order )

1) The newer Star Wars series. I cannot imagine being paid to sleep outside in order to obtain movie tickets, let alone do it for free. Computer animation is so commonplace, and so I am very unimpressed with the visualization of the films in addition to the stories themselves. I just don't get it. (im sure i'll get a beating for this one - haha)

2) The Blair Witch Project: Now don't get me wrong, I didn't go into this one (what was it---6-7 yrs ago?) expecting a masterpiece, but REALLY. This movie inspired countless parodies, commercials and the like, when it not only SUCKED, but it was so unoriginal. I honestly have never seen a worse film (okay, aside from Sgt. Bilko) and cannot believe there was such HYPE over it. Baffling and quite sad.

3) The Passion of the Christ: I thought this was well done, but I really was put off by all the rage this movie ensued...and in my opinion, for all the wrong reasons.

No.1 Shindler's List, everytime I try to watch it I fall asleep it does not hold my attention.

No.2 I have to agree with Dad, Christmas Story is not even remotely entertaining or funny. Luckily I have only ever watched it once and have not wasted a lot of time on it.

No.3 Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

Ok Mike made me feel bad for Schindler's List and I will try to watch it again sometime.

Hmm, I'm gonna have to pile on Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and pretty much every other film of that nature. The few that I've seen were all beautifully shot and utilized some amazing imagery but I was absolutely bored to tears with the "subtle" (sarcasm) plotlines and mostly unresolved endings. Not that everything has to come out "happy" in the end but I am a fan of SOMETHING happening one way or the other in the end. I'd even take Shane riding off on his horse into the sunset over some of those endings!

I was actually going to but Schindler's List as number one, but felt bad doing so... however, I'm in agreement on that choice!!

(In the voice of Bill Lumberg ala Office Space)

Okay-- yeaahhhhh... I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree with the Rissell faction on this one...

Schindler's list was remarkable... and I guess you either love A Christmas Story, or you hate it.

Are you having trouble with your TPS reports?

1. Any Meg Ryan Movie! Not that they ever were held in any acclaim!!!!
2. As Good As It Gets - The only movie that I ever left early.
3. I definitely agree with the Star Wars - Boring! I rather watch paint dry.
4. Lord of the Rings Trilogy - I rather watch Karen watch paint dry.
5. E.T. - it was cool when I was 5 but I watched it again and it really sucks.
6. Fantasia - What was that??????

Yes, I did give Karen a hard time because I feel the movie can not be judged in this way. It is based on actual historical events that should never be judged as overrated!!!!

In my answers, I based my selections on movies that: 1) got some critical acclaim, 2) were mega box office draws, or 3) have a huge cult following.

1.) Lord of the Rings parts 1 & 2-- I will give it up for the third installment, simply because that one had an ending.

2.) The Matrix trilogy-- This for no other reason than Keanu Reeves is a dreadful actor.

3.) There's Something About Mary-- heard it was hilarious; it wasn't.

I will post more as they come to me. These were just the first ones that immediately jumped out at me.

Ha, speaking of Office Space, I'll answer this poll for Kelly's parents since they're out of town. They both thought Office Space was WAY overrated and "dumb" so I'll unofficially supply that as their answer.

I am having a hard time with this poll. Though I will say that "The Ring" was quite a letdown. I did not find it as scary as predicted. I kept waiting for that moment when I would scream out loud, and it just kept not happening.

I think it's crazy that some of you do not appreciate "Office Space". Malarchious.

I think Office Space is one of the greatest movies EVER ... but I digress. There are plenty of "horror" movies that I found disappointing but they weren't really critically acclaimed.

Having someone say to me "oh, you should see this, it's so scary" and then not finding it to be scary is not exactly the same thing as a critically acclaimed movie that just didn't do it for you. Either way it's "overrated" I guess.

You make a good point. My choice was not exactly what you asked for. I took some poetic license in answering. No one in particular told me it was scary. The world told me.
