power of suggestion

Yesterday, after a particularly stressful day of work, my coworker said to me "ya know, these are the days that make me think about leaving the field". He quickly followed with "but I don't know what else I'd do because this is what I'm actually good at".

Given the beautiful weather we're having, it's already tough for me to think about my job while I look out my window and see the cloudless sky (an absolute rarity in the valley). With him mentioning "leaving the field" it was just the extra nudge I needed to seriously consider it again.

Okay, okay, it's not so much "leaving the field" (because I have no idea where I'd go) as it is joining the ranks of the field-less. (It's not like America would collapse if I didn't work another summer, right?) This year, however, I'm doing my absolute best to limit vacations to just three weeks or LESS ... I'm really going to fight the urge to cut my hours back, eschew responsibility and increase time spent in the sun ... only time will tell.

I've long wondered if the end-of-semester doldrums continue after you don't have semesters anymore. Well, now I have an answer. Here's to you, Tom: Still getting senioritis seven years later.

Good luck to you. Don't be so harsh on yourself you deserve three weeks.:-)

Ya know, it's LIKE senioritis but far worse. With senioritis, you knew that, regardless of how long the days seemed, you were eventually going to have off for the summer. There's this VERY depressing permanence to being a working stiff because there is no "end" of the year. There is no guarantee of a summer off or of a fresh start in the fall. There SHOULD be but there isn't. (To those teachers reading this, pay no attention to the rambling ... you don't count.)

If you want your summers off, go back to school and become a teacher. You do not have to be a teacher at a school district, be a college professor. Then you will have plenty of time off, especially because they only teach 10 hours a week or something like that. As for wanting to take a summer off, it is your life you do what you want, but just for the record it is called growing up. I hate to say it but your getting old just like me! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
