I just finished Michael Crichton's newest book, State of Fear. I'll preface my recommendation by sharing my existing fondness of Crichton's books as good, fairly quick reads with fairly good science. Most of his books (and, yes, I have read most of them)are a great balance of plot, character and science all packaged in a nice, pulpy exterior that facilitates completion in a single weekend.
That being said, this book is a MUST read for EVERYONE and that's not mere hyperbole. Sure, the story itself might not be the best you've ever read but it's the relevance and outright contradiction of many commonly held public beliefs which struck me as fascinating. I don't want to give any more away because I don't want you to have too many expectations as you read it for fear that you will simply find what you think you're looking for (which will mean more when you finish the book).
NEway, I recommend it. Don't read the synopsis on the back, don't read any reviews (I haven't yet) don't ask me about what happens, just read it and tell me what you think.
Posted by languorous at January 21, 2005 11:30 AMPerhaps I will pick it up, I am always looking for a good book recommendation. On the same note, I very much recommend "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West". Fascinating. A great fairy tale and very interesting :)

J, skip right to this Chrichton book ... then go back and hit the old x-mas pile. It's pretty quick and I'm curious on everyone's thoughts.
Posted by: languorous at January 21, 2005 08:44 PMHah, I dunno, David Sedaris is a pretty funny guy...
I hear that Wicked is an awesome book, much better than the lackluster musical, which I DID see. It's on my list, but a ways back. Have I recommended Iain M Banks to you yet? Remind me to bring some of his stuff home next time I come.
Posted by: Jason at January 22, 2005 12:43 AMMy recommendations:
1) I know This Much Is True- Wally Lamb
2) The Da Vinci Code- Dan Brown
3) Me Talk Pretty One Day- David Sedaris
4) Anything John Irving
Currently Reading: A Widow For One Year (irving)
Those are all great books :)
