first poll of the new year

Well, it's been a while but it's poll time again. This isn't going to be easy. You'll have to throw caution to the wind, live dangerously, expose your deepest, darkest secret to the world. Think you can handle it? Here goes ...

Name your biggest musical guilty pleasure. (Feel free to list a Top 3 if you're having a hard time narrowing it down to one.)

Do you slam dance to Styx? Do you get wiggity wack with Kriss Kross? Have a deep affection for Enya? Maybe a love affair with Neil Diamond? Let's have it.

I'll try to post my response by early afternoon tomorrow.

It is funny that you chose this as a poll, because I must have read on at least 10 websites and magazines that deal with music; different celebrities musical guilty pleasures. Of course though, I am going to have to answer the poll because I am a sucker for polls.

First - ABBA - The Swedes really make me want the Disco era to come back. Also there is nothing like drinking and singing along to "Dancing Queen" with a bunch of friends.

Second - Neil Diamond - "Forever in Blue Jeans" ENOUGH SAID!!!!

Third - John Denver - Yes, I know this helps support TEX'S habit - but I love singing along with all of his songs especially "Rocky Mountain High", "Leaving On a Jet Plane", and my favorite the sappy, love song "Annie's Song"

Those are all equally bad guilty pleasures but, that's kinda the point so, nice job.

Here goes ...

1) T.A.T.U - Despite J's opinion, I don't think the fact that they're lesbians is their "gig" exactly ... but the visual imagery sure can't hurt.

2) All my female artist. Yeah, I love'm but not too many people even believe that I listen to half the stuff I do.

3) 80's music from 80's movies. It's only logical, a lot of 80's movies are also my guilty pleasures.

Posted by: languorous at January 7, 2005 11:49 AM

I don't know if this qualifies as a guilty pleasure because I don't give a shit who knows that I like 'em, but here'a goes.

The Darkness - An acquired taste, I admit, but they have balls to play 70s glam in a time where Britney, Nelly, and Petey Pablo are the idols of today's youth.

If you want more I can give specific songs... but I don't feel too guilty about most of the stuff I listen to... I mean, I can't say country! or teenie-bopper boy bands! Or whiny little-girl punk posers! :-)

Posted by: Robb at January 7, 2005 06:13 PM

I'm just gonna say it...there are a few country songs that I listen to now. I credit Joe with that, he loves that country twang.

I would have to say that my guiltiest pleasure, that I not embarrassed of really, is that I listen to the Postal Service over and over and over and over. It never gets old.

Posted by: Lori at January 7, 2005 07:17 PM

A clarification ... guilt doesn't equal embarrassment. Also, I never said that the guilt was induced from external stimuli. You can very easily feel guilty about liking something regardless of what other people think. I, having the musical background I do, feel guilty for wasting my time listening to things like T.A.T.U when there are millions of things more musical to listen to.

Robb, don't worry tough guy, you might not care what people think about what you listen to but I remember you refusing to tell us one of your favorite movies for fear of ridicule ... we'll get to movies soon enough :-)

Posted by: languorous at January 7, 2005 07:31 PM

Sadly all of my music is guilty pleasures. I enjoy Elton John, Bette Midler and Billy Joel as some fine listening music.

Posted by: Karen at January 7, 2005 07:34 PM

I listen to all types of music but I guess the top three that may be a little odd would be as follows:

1) A Chicago (the group) cd (not sure of the name) where they cover other music-- ie, Frank Sinatra

2) Broadway Musicals: I love the soundtracks to the shows I've seen-- Rent and Chicago in particular. And, I have no problem belting them out on the hour commute I have to work every day

3) Earth, Wind & Fire: they're fab.

Posted by: Christina at January 7, 2005 11:37 PM

Musicals blow, hahaha :-)

Earth, Wind & Fire should not be a guilty pleasure!

Posted by: languorous at January 7, 2005 11:48 PM

Tom, I didn't want to mention the movies that time because they were dramas that most people probably never saw or heard of.

Secondly, I considered the Darkness a guilty pleasure because they are a band that I like... even though the lead vocalist is admittedly caustic on the ears at times.

It's not like a selected entire genres of music as my guilty pleasures. :-)

Posted by: Robb at January 8, 2005 09:12 AM

Alright, out with it: Britney's Toxic is a pretty damn catchy tune. However, (this is either redeeming or damning, depending on your point of view), I think the Jalad mix of it with Love Shack is better.

Posted by: Jason at January 8, 2005 01:03 PM

Ah, this is a great post topic! Lets see, I know y'all are expecting me to list the country music I like, well I aint feeling guilty about that, cause much of it is more musical than pop music (and certainly the Darkness).

1. Tupac - All Eyez on Me: I dont like much rap music, can't get into it unless I either want to laugh, or am driving aggresively. However, I think this album really crossed some major boundaries, and I dig alot of the songs on it.

2. this is in the past, but yeah, listening to Britney in the warehouse at Circuit City, I did feel a little guilty, because she has no real voice. Maybe it was the film footage running in my head from all of her videos :-)

3. Oh brother where art thou: I really dig "Man of Constant Sorrow" which is totally bluegrass. I saw a live version of it done on an Eric Clapton benefit concert on PBS, played by Dan Tymian (sp?) It was really cool.

there are many other things others might call guilty pleasures, but I dont think of them like that cause I listen to them all the time, and think they are as good as anything else!

Jon-- you listen to the guitar work and harmonies of the Darkness and they put Toby Keith and his brand of slack-jawed dar-dee-dar hootin' and hollarin' redneck crap to shame.

Toby Keith is terrible. I know that you did not even mention him in your post, but I will take this forum to exclaim how terrible Toby Keith is. Simply terrible.

Posted by: Robb at January 8, 2005 02:06 PM

no way, toby Keith is substantially better than "the Darkness". First of all, all they do is overlay 17 guitar solos on top of each other, wow, that is REAL tough. Secondly, their song lyrics SUCK. A lot of Toby Keith music is drinking music, I dont argue that, but at least the songs make some type of sense, and his voice, while distinctive, isnt obnoxiously annoying. Toby Keith has been successfully around for at least 10 years, do you see the Darkness having long term appeal. VOMIT

Posted by: Jon at January 8, 2005 02:14 PM

Toby Keith is best known for a song that has the lyrics "we'll put a boot in your ass. it's the american way." I'm sorry-- I cannot support that idiot.

With songs like "Whose Your Daddy?" and "Whiskey Girl" and "Beer for my Horses" and "Ain't much Fun since I quit Drinking"... hmmmm-- those make a whole lot of sense.... TO REDNECKS!

Posted by: Robb at January 8, 2005 02:28 PM

Just because you are so passive that you let Dan kick your ass, thats not my fault. Toby Keith says it like it is. I would not say he is one of the most musical of the artists I listen to, but he writes great lyrics, and good honky tonk tunes. And he obviously has broad appeal, because Joe is into him and he is in his 50's, and generally does not listen to anything country. I mean Robb, I can say that I can get into a few Darkness tunes from time to time, but cmon, At least Keith writes real lyrics, and can sing in his format. That guy's impression of Freddies voice is nothing more than a disservice to a rock legend

Posted by: Jon at January 8, 2005 02:41 PM

"but he writes great lyrics" -- Refer to my previous post where I list some of his song titles.

"I wanna talk about me, I wanna talk about I
Wanna talk about number one oh my, me, my!"

"We’ll raise up our glasses against evil forces
Singing whiskey for my men, beer for my horses"

Need I say more!

Posted by: Robb at January 8, 2005 02:47 PM

out of context they make no sense. "I wanna talk about me" is an amusing song about his girlfriend not giving him a chance to speak.

"Whiskey for my men, beer for my horses" is a song about the old west, and catching outlaws. Its a story dumbass.

but no, no, the Darkness really has it down:

Touching you, touching me
Touching you, cause you're touching me

As the Guiness commerical, BRILLIANT. This argument is a waste, you dont like country, fine, but stop trying to bring it down, as Toby Keith has way more talent and appeal than the Darkness.

Posted by: Jon at January 8, 2005 03:54 PM

Okay, replace Earth, Wind& Fire with the Gypsy Kings :)

Posted by: Christina at January 9, 2005 01:16 PM

Popular poll, this one. Well, in addition to my earlier comment, tack on the Ultra album from Depeche mode. Just found it in my CD binder, figured it deserved mention. Certainly a guilt factor there.

Also, as long as we're reaching way back, I'm apparently the only person on the planet that liked the U2 album Pop. Not really guilt, there, but I don't even think GAR likes that.

Posted by: Jason at January 10, 2005 06:48 AM

Jon, you are a musician so you should understand this quite well. Toby Keith is NOT a musical talent, nor is he poetic, nor respectable.

Although you may not be able to relate to the Darnkess' lyrics, you must certainly recognize their balls-out hard rock talents (amazing guitar riffs, driving beats, and ear-shattering harmonies).

I know you will admit they have talent... unfortunately you can't say the same about Mr. Tobes.

Posted by: Robb at January 10, 2005 03:36 PM

Sorry, I think if you read the lyrics of Toby Keith, while you may not like them, youd agree that they do tell a story, and make more sense than the Darkness. Quite frankly, I dont care what you like or do not like. While I am not a large fan of "the Darkness" I could see where someone could get into them. But dont tell me that Toby Keith can't write good songs in his genre, and can't sing as well in his genre, or anything else. Its bullshit, and a cop out.

Check Yourself!

Posted by: Jon at January 10, 2005 03:57 PM

Look-- I had enuff of this debate. I admit it-- I suck. I have no talent. Even I can't stand listening to myself.

Robb has is right. Please, stop listening to my music before your brain rots completely.

Posted by: Toby Keith at January 10, 2005 04:01 PM

This isn't really related, but did anyone see the TV spot for 'American Idol' during the NFC game where the one guy does a cover of 'The Darkness'? Hilarious...

Posted by: Garrett at January 10, 2005 06:05 PM

Yes-- and yes! That is perhaps the ONLY reason to tune into American Idol-- to see that guy butcher an otherwise wonderful piece of music!

The guy can't pull it off, but at least he has good taste!

Posted by: Robb at January 10, 2005 06:25 PM

I think it's great that this poll has turned into a grudgematch. Ahh, Jon and Robb go head to head....I have been delightfully entertained. I'm glad that Toby Keith got on here and put an end to it all ;)

Posted by: Lori at January 10, 2005 09:12 PM

Ha, yeah, it's nice to see everyone pitching in, thanks for all the effort, as misguided as it all might have been! I'll think twice about any more guilty pleasure polls. There will be more polls soon though so stay tuned.

Posted by: languorous at January 10, 2005 10:49 PM

Yeah, watching Jon and Rob go head to head is pretty entertaining the first couple dozen times.

Posted by: Jason at January 10, 2005 11:22 PM

Ya'all are too much! if ya'all want to come out and see what a real country band sounds like in person, Im gonna be at the Sovereign Center in Reading next Thursday. I know Jon said he was gonna be there, and I of course welcome all of you to come out and get a little "Mud on the Tires".
