anticipation

Poll at end.

I leave tomorrow morning for Charlotte, NC where I will be picking up my car and driving home. I haven't missed my car too much because I've been out of town so often this summer but, as the date approaches, I'm looking forward to getting it back more and more.

See, I like to go fast and my car does that pretty well. That's really the reason I bought it in the first place. That's not the only reason, however, that I enjoy driving for liesure. It's just nice to be out of the house sometimes and to see what's going on in the world, even if it's a relatively small radius around my house. While it was tough not having my car all summer to enjoy the nice weather, it's really much nicer in the fall and spring anyway because it's a black car and, well, it gets DAMN hot in the summer.

Just writing about it now makes me want to hop in the car, throw on some of my favorite music and cruise around. What's your Top 5 list of "driving music"?

It was a tough list, but I think I have finally gotten it correct:

Number five: Counting Crows: August and Everything
Number four: Soundtrack: American Wedding
Number three: Dave Matthews Band: Live in MSG
Number two: Rage Against the Machine: Self Titled
Number one: Incubus: A Crow Left of the Murder

Wow, that list really surprises me. I thought for sure that you would have included Likin Park.

Top Five: Anything by Dave Matthews

Anything by Billy Joel

Anything by Blues Traveler

Movie Soundtracks

Anything by Five for Fighting

Anything by Blues Traveler

Instead of a 1 to 5 list, I will organize my five picks according to season.

Winter:
Queen - "A Day at the Races", "A Night at the Opera", and "Greatest Hits"

Spring:
Dave Matthews Band - anything will do

Summer:
Matchbox Twenty - "Yourself or Someone Like You"

Fall:
Dave Brubeck - "Time Out", "Brubeck Plays Brubeck", and "Red, Hot, & Cool"

Honorable Mentions:
Lifehouse - "No Name Face"
Angie Aparro - "The American"

Yea, I thought about Linkin Park...but I only have really started listening to them recently. I like them a lot, BUT they haven't been around long enough in my collection to be considered all time favorites.

I don't drive, so I'll offer you a deal. You give me a spare car and pay for its upkeep in NYC, and then I'll answer this poll.

Karen, yes, I love Blues Traveler too, but you can only list them once ... and can you be more vague? :-)

Posted by: languorous at September 8, 2004 08:41 PM

Well, this is a tough one for me because i do not listen to whole albums since I've gotten my ipod. I have a low tolerance for too much of the same music at one time. But, here are my top 5 songs at the moment; songs that I play on repeat constantly.

1) Here Comes the Rain Again - the Eurythmics

2) Sign Your Name Across My Heart- Terence Trent D'Arby.

3)Overnight Celebrity- Twista (yeah, i love ghetto tunes)

4)Drive- The Cars

5) Mad World- Gary Jules ( From the donnie darko soundtrack! He eerily sounds like the lead singer from REM... get this song- its great - especially the piano in the background)

What kind of car did you purchase?

Posted by: Christina at September 8, 2004 10:27 PM

ha, I have no idea what half of those songs are ... you big-city folk are so cultured :-) About the car ... didn't buy a new one, just picked up the hot one after a heavy-duty tranny rebuild.

Well, I'll keep this simple...

1. First and foremost, I will listen to any Dave Matthews Band CD, preferably live concerts such as "Live at the Gorge" or "Listener's Supported"

2. I enjoy listening to any of Matchbox Twenty's albums

3. Fuel- Sunburn

4. Lifehouse-No Name Face

5. For a relaxing drive...I gotta have Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin (lol)

Posted by: DTF at September 9, 2004 11:24 AM

1. Pearl Jam - It does not matter what album they all are incredible especially their live albums.

2. Red Hot Chile Peppers - Again it does not matter all albums rock.

3. Coldplay - Yes, a newer group but still the last two albums are extremely calming and today's drivers are just awful.

4. Chris Cornell - It does not matter whether it is with Soundgarden, Audioslave, or his solo album he has the coolest voice next to Eddie Vedder.

5. Last but most important - whatever Karen wants to listen to because she is the one that is always controlling the radio anyway. Ideally the top 4 would be my choices, but I always loose out.

I gotta agree with Mike on the Pearl Jam-- anytime of year... anytime of day... throw on some Veddar and just cruise.

Personal favorites are "Nothing Man", "Daughter", "Better Man", "Corduroy", and "Yellow Ledbetter".

The best albums are the live concert album. I have a couple of the concert cds but the best one, which I saw personally, is the Friday Night Concert at Camden. I should make a copy for you Robb.

Posted by: Yossarian16 at September 9, 2004 09:01 PM

Mike-- that would be hot. I have one or two of their live concerts, but I want to hear the one that you were at... so whenver you get the chance, hook me up!

Posted by: Robb at September 10, 2004 03:56 PM

tom, most of those songs are from the 80's- if you heard them, i'm sure you'd recognize them!
City folk hahha- PLEASE. Although, yes, i live in NYC. Why doesn't your girlfriend EVER contribute to your blog? haha

a bit late, but here we go!

1. Matchbox Twenty - I can't tell you how many times I have listened MB20 while driving, or being a passenger in a car. Im surprised I havent worn out all my cds!

2. Billy Joel - "Greatest Hits - One" or "the Stranger" (one and the same really). I love all Billy Joel, but this one is a must!

3. Elton John - "Love Songs" this is a great one for those long rides home late at night after a concert, and a great sing-a-long! ;-)

4. Hootie - "Fairweather Johnson" or "Scattered Smothered and Covered" Once again, I like all Hootie, but these two I have played endlessly. Great Lyrics and voice!

5. Country Junction 1, 2, & 3 - Recently, my mix cd series has been in my Truck non stop, consisiting of tunes from Garth Brooks, Kenny Chesney, Joe Nichols, George Strait, Brad Paisley, David Lee Murphy, Sara Evans.... I like my own mixes so much, I may never replace them with anything else again! HAHAHAHAHAH

Posted by: Jon at September 12, 2004 05:33 PM

Country Junction sucks!

Posted by: Robb at September 12, 2004 06:15 PM

True.

Posted by: languorous at September 12, 2004 11:01 PM

No Way! the critically acclaimed "Country Junction" series is a tremendous musical value for the listener. Much of the lyrical and musical content is far greater the untalented bunch of malarky flowing through our airwaves today. Perhaps if some of us could get past our preconceived notions, we might be able to see the light.......at the end of the hat! HAHA!

Posted by: Jon at September 12, 2004 11:59 PM

freak, you did NOT just say malarky

Posted by: christina at September 13, 2004 07:13 PM

Oh but yes I did! Malarky is a fine word to use at such a time, in a thingamajig like this!
