Poll at the end of the post.
Okay, I've been patiently waiting for the return of one of my all-time favorite websites but it's been about a week now and still nothing. The site is fast-rewind and it's all about 80's movies. It appears to have fallen and it can't seem to get up.
As an admitted 80's movie fan, I hit this site every now and then to see what they've added. My favorite features on the site are the trivia and archaeology sections. The trivia section just gives little FYI's that most people don't know about the movie. The archaeology section gives information, and sometimes links to photos and virtual tours of actual filming locations. One day, I'm going to travel and see the sites of some of my favorite 80's films ... most are intentionally left in the same condition but some have been bulldozed. I fear that the longer I wait, the less likely it is that I'll be able to visit them while they're still recognizable.
NEway, if ANYONE has ANY news about what's up with fast-rewind, please let me know. Thanks!
Until it's back up, how about a quick poll. How about a top-five list of your favorite 80's movies. I imagine that this might be dificult for two reasons. One, you might not have seen five whole movies in the 80's (I know, I know, it's almost inconceivable). Two, you've seen so many that you're having a hard time narrowing it down to five. Either way, give it some time and effort and it'll be a worthwhile exercise. It'll also help you get back into the practice of answering polls on chasm again which will be useful as I post and poll more regularly going forward.
Posted by languorous at September 3, 2004 01:28 PMBefore my contribution to the poll, are these 80s movies the typical Brat-Pack ones, or anything from the 80's???
Posted by: Christina at September 3, 2004 02:16 PMAnything from the 80's, have fun!
Posted by: languorous at September 3, 2004 03:07 PMOk, in no particular order (because I can't bare to pick any over the other):
- The Terminator (1984)
The movie that made Arnold a super-star, it's
a classic!
- Back To The Future (1985 - 1990)
I could list the three of these separately,
but they're all so good I had to lump them
together. I mean, come on, Marty McFly!
- Indiana Jones (1981 - 1989)
Same with Indiana Jones, although I wasn't too
crazy about the Temple of Doom, Raiders more
than makes up for any flaws the other
installments might have had.
- Heathers (1989)
A classic satire of the ol' "in-crowd" clique
so prevalent in high school. Plus, it's got
Winona Ryder before she turned over to a life
of crime.
- Labyrinth (1986)
Look, David Bowie is _in_ the movie.
'Nuff said.
My List:
1) Adventures in Babysitting: I think my brother and I watched this every day...it was a kid's dream to escape the normal babysitter nights full of board games and storybooks for a night on the town. NYC, was it? Great movie-- prob one of Elisabeth Shue's first films.
2) Rain Man- Dustin Hoffman was absolutely amazing and hysterical in it. But in all its humor, it turns out to be much more than a comedy, which I like. Im not a fan of pure slapstick comedies. No thanks.
3) The Goonies- Again, my bro and I were obsessed. I wanted nothign more than to slide down those waterslides in the end into the ocean. Whatever happened to Sean Astin? He was adorable back then.
4) Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom. My dad owns this movie in every format possible: VHS, Laser disc and DVD. It is the most ridiculously UNbelieveable movie ever, but I do enjoy it... espec the scene where they find that secret passageway full of bugs. Eyeball soup was up there as well. Chilled monkey brains anyone? :)
5) ET- Although I hated it back then because it made me cry, it really is a fabulous movie.
ps- this is in random order after my #1
Posted by: Christina at September 3, 2004 05:01 PMMost 80s movies SUCKED-- but the following will have a special place in my heart forever.
1) The Untouchables: Kevin Costner, Sean Connery, and Robert Deniro-- this cast is, dare I say, untouchable.
2) Amadeus: We all know that Salieri DIDN'T murder Mozart, but this fictional account is still hot. F.Murray Abraham's portrayal of Antonio Salieri is amazing.
3) Predator: Boy, these guys can act.
4) Rainman: Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman are great. Deffelly-deffelly in my top-5.
5) Ferris Bueller's Day Off: Now, THIS is an eighties movie! The principal is the funniest stereotype EVA'! Sloane (Mia Sara) is (quoting Gar) "not too shabby"!!!
and lastly, a seasonal pick:
6) A Christmas Story: From Good Friday to New Year's, I will have watched this movie 77 times.
Posted by: Robb at September 3, 2004 06:31 PMOK, let's see, in no order:
1) Back to the Future. "If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits eighty-eight miles per hour... you're gonna see some serious shit. "
2) Raiders of the Lost Ark. "Yeah? I'll tell you what. Until I get back my five thousand dollars, you're gonna get more than you bargained for. I'm your goddamn partner!"
3) Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. "Who's scruffy-looking?"
4) Ferris Bueller's Day Off. "Not that I condone fascism, or any -ism for that matter. -Ism's in my opinion are not good. A person should not believe in an -ism, he should believe in himself. I quote John Lennon, 'I don't believe in The Beatles, I just believe in me.' Good point there. After all, he was the walrus. I could be the walrus and I'd still have to bum rides off of people."
5) Ghostbusters. "Yes, it's true. This man has no dick."
Definitely hard to narrow down. I'm sure I'll kick myself later for leaving something out. Honorable mention to Amadeus, thanks to Rob for bringing it up.
Posted by: Jason at September 3, 2004 07:21 PMOkay, I've taken long enough ... after the tie for number one, the order is arbitrary ...
1a. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (Tie)
1b. Goonies (Tie)
2. Never Ending Story
3. Sixteen Candles
4. Back to the Future
5. Can't Buy Me Love
A special recognition for 80's movies with Corey Haim and Corey Feldman. None alone makes my Top Five but I was a big fan of almost all of them.
I'm SURE I'm forgetting some, five is so hard, alright, whatever, I've delayed long enough, there it is.
Posted by: languorous at September 8, 2004 08:38 PMThis is easy, but I am sure some of the movies I pick some of you youngens never heard of them. No particular order: RAD - it is a very cool BMX movie not to mention Lori Loughlin is in the movie, NORTH SHORE - the legendary LAIRD HAMILTON is in this awesome surfing movie, BETTER OFF DEAD - John Cusack at his finest, COMMANDO - Bah, to those that think Terminator started Arnold's career it definiteli is Commando, THE FLAMINGO KID - Janet Evans nevered looked so fine another honorable mention (AMERICAN ANTHEM) I believe she is naked in one scene - I could definitely go on, I would like to give MADD PROPS to Languorous for posting things from my GENERATION!!!!
Posted by: Yossarian16 at September 9, 2004 02:10 PMI am glad that Jay, Tom, and I are all on the same page with "Ferris Bueller's Dayoff". We should all get together and watch it sometime. Also-- "Can't Buy Me Love" is so 80s and so damn good, I can't believe I left it off my list.
And finally, I would like to give props to Mike for naming five movies that I have never heard of before.
Posted by: Robb at September 9, 2004 05:59 PMThis is so funny but I wanted to get ideas before I wrote my list, and low and behold I say the list that I completely agreed with, probably because we watched most of the movies together. Langourous see we do have things in common;-p
Posted by: Karen at September 9, 2004 10:27 PMYeah, wow, I knew I was missing a movie from my list but I never imagined that I'd be missing one of my favorite movies of all time. As another tie for my number one choice, add Real Genius.
Posted by: languorous at September 11, 2004 11:37 PMNot heavily into 80's movies, so it appears I have the same choices as many others, but here goes
1. Planes, Trains, & Automobiles - so god damn funny, it hurts!
2. The Untouchables, great moviw starring Costner and Connery. Graphic for its time.
3. Predator - Cmon,Arnold Schwarzenneger battling an Alien! "out there, in the trees" or "cmon, Kill me, Kill me NOW!!!!" A classic flic.
4. Star Wars - Empire Strikes Back - my personal favorite of the "Star Wars" series.
5. As a big John Candy fan, I have to list "The Great Outdoors" on my list as well. "Ive been hit by lightning, ssssix, ssssix, ssssix hundred sixty-six times, in in in in the HEAD!"
