Stumbled on this one ... it's a top fifteen list of most tortured sports cities and Philly came in, obviously, second. That's right, the town of second-place finishes finished second, AGAIN.

GOD I LOVE WHEN THE PHILLIES GET THUMPED BY THE METS! WHOO! 3 homeruns in one inning is just too great! Cant wait for football season to start so I can root against the Eagles!
Posted by: Jon at July 8, 2004 01:22 PMSpoken like a true banwagon fan!
Posted by: Karen at July 8, 2004 04:48 PMRooting for the Mets has never been tantamount to hopping on the bandwagon....trust me.
Posted by: Garrett at July 8, 2004 06:38 PMyeah, seriously. cmon, I have followed the Mets for a long time. Admittedly, in the mid 90's when I lost interest in baseball, I strayed a bit. The Mets were absolutely horendous, everyone I liked was gone, and the strike was shitty. The thing that made me come back to watching MLB again was pitching. Watching Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz got me interested again. But I always rooted for the Mets, no bandwagon here! And above all else, I hate Philly teams. The only Philly team I ever liked was when they had Dykstra and McDowell (cause they were previouly Mets) And cmon, John Kruk was just a cool guy. But screw it, Bobby Abreu, Larry Bowa, and the pathetic pitching staff that stinks worse than the three cat litter pans at my house will rot before they ever SERIOUSLY win anything. Its a good thing the Expos are in the NL East, or else the phillies would have losing records against all their division teams. In short, SUCK IT PHILADELPHIA, Lets go METS. Glavine you look GREAT in orange and blue! Cmon Robo and Gar, are you with me?!?!?!?
This post is about PHILLY. Any further comments about other cities will be deleted :-)
Posted by: languorous at July 9, 2004 08:19 AMHmm, Im not sure I can elaborate much more on Philadelphia at this point, but Ill try. 76ers....Iverson can whine till the cows come home, they are not winning a championship anytime soon. The Eagles, now there is an embarassment, 3 NFC Championship games and 3 losses. LOVE IT! The Flyers, probably the best of the pack, but still choke artists none the less. My personal favorite, the Phillies. 1 Championship, 24 years ago. Now this year, this year is their year. The kind of talent they have on their bench, I mean all of the MLB is in TROUBLE!!! HAHA, yeah, I dont think so. A beautiful new stadium cant make a winner out of perennial losers. Hows that for posting about PHILA! :-)
Posted by: Jon at July 9, 2004 09:39 AMDon't hate unless you want someone hatin' on you. (The new ghetto-ized Golden Rule)
Posted by: languorous at July 9, 2004 12:36 PMWOW! Certainly a lot of Philly hating going on these days. Although, not really unexpected. However, the ironic part is that when in dialogue with some of these haters, I had been given reasons like "Philly isn't a Baseball town, they are nothing more than a scrub team." Well that simply isn't so. If one were to look back in history, they would simply find that a Philadelphia baseball team has been to the world series 12 times, and won 6 of them. I think that is a remarkable feat. Besides the city only 90 miles northeast of A-town, what other city can boast such an accolade. While I must admit that Philly doesn't house my favorite baseball team, I cannot denounce or detract from the achievements they have made. As far as the more recent hating and disgracing of the Philadelphia Eagles, I simply ask, WHERE DID YOUR TEAM END UP?...WHEN WAS YOUR SEASON OVER?...WHEN DID YOU STOP CARING? Mine wasn't until the end of January. I enjoyed many great Sundays, and mondays (cuz we are that good that we get on many of them), oh yea and the thurs night and sat night game here and there. As for the flyers and the sixers, I can honestly say I don't watch or follow them enough to be considered a "fan" by any Philadelphian. And yes it is true, Philly fans hold stricter ideas about who is a "real" fan. However, back to the whole notion of Philly being a tortured city. I believe that the "tortured" part of the equation encompasses the idea that in order to be "tortured" the city must have some undying love for their teams. And this is definitely true of Philadelphia. How can one come to hate a city that lives for it sports. A city that is mostly comprised of middle class Americans. Real, hardworking Americans that love to watch their team win. Sure they might not win the big games, but they get close each year, and man is it exciting! For all those haters out there, tell me when the last time your sports team town went nuts when you won the division. (nuts being defined as dressing famous statues in the city with sports apparrel, or not dressing the statues becuase you lost the last time you did that.) Those actions are from from a people that love their team and will show their support any way thay can. I don't think that Philly fans get extremely excited because they haven't won the big game in some time, but rather they get very excited because they worship their teams. As Bowa points out so beautifully about Philly fans "They work for every dollar they earn. Nothing is given to these people. They're blue-collar workers. They love to see people get their uniform dirty. They love to see people put in time at their job. They love to see passion, emotion" I believe that herein lies the "tortured" city. Philly is only "tortured" because the people demand them to do well. While over history, they haven't been all that bad, it is simply the mediocre record in a city that demands exemplary achievments that makes it "tortured".
Posted by: Berg at July 13, 2004 02:37 AMPassionate comments coming from a FREAKIN' MET FAN! You should be ashamed of yourself.
Posted by: Robb at July 13, 2004 06:38 PMAbsolutely right. The sign of a true Met fan is the ability to stay calm and collected even while Beneitez is blowing a five run lead with 2 outs in the 9th.
Posted by: Garrett at July 13, 2004 07:03 PMHere's the next article on the series. I love that Philly couldn't even get #1 in THIS list.

Posted by: Jason at July 14, 2004 11:09 AMUsually I am against shit-talking... but shit-talking is NOT the same as hating. Hating is totally reasonable (and socially acceptable) IF your team is a direct rival of the team that you're hating on. Example-- division rivals, city rivals, state rivals, etc...
Several of us went to Allen-- now tell me we did not gain pleasure from hating on Dieruff every homecoming game? Some people (who will remain nameless) go to Muhlenberg-- and don't let a collegiate discussion go by without hating on us Moravian alum! The point is: if your team, school, or city is a natural rival, I say HATE ON!
